Amie - what did you think of The Great Gatsby?

Well, I love Keeping Up Appearances and I love The Great Gatsby. I guess both Daisy and Hyacinth really epitomize all the things that bother me about people, therefore making my hatred of everyone legitimate. It makes sense in my head.

The Great Gatsby has always been one of my favorite books and Elliot one of my favorite authors. I believe I have every episode of Keeping Up Appearances memorized. Here's what I believe the difference is. There are people who don't believe in cause and effect, consequence of action and personal responsibility, those people prefer to surround themselves only with pleasantness and ignore truth or any sense of reality. They dislike characters who show them that people are NOT all essentially good people with good intentions and are misunderstood or misguided. We on the other hand, expect people to be primarily pains in our royal asses and therefor enjoy seeing them receive their come-up-ances. This has to be the most poorly spelled comment I have ever left anywhere.

Beth - This is true. Daisy and Hyacinth are both good examples of how people can go horribly, horribly wrong. Oddly enough, and I didn't think of this before- they are both flowers. Hmm... Of course, all the women in KUA are named after flowers, but still, I don't think the creators were inspired by theGG, or were they?

oomm - You may be on to something there. Books with only good people in them would not only be unrealistic, but they also would get quite boring after a while.

Wow, they *are* both flowers. And sadly, the first time I read GG, in high school, I remember thinking that I would like to be like Daisy. I'm actually shaking my head right now. Bad Beth.

Beth - A high school student wants to be a rich bitch? No surprise there. I mean, 90210 anyone? Don't feel so bad.

I think I'm screwing up your pretty theory. I love The Great Gatsby and I can't watch Keeping Up Appearances. It's not so much that I hate Hyacinth, although I do, but that I can't stand to watch the horrible embarrassment she gets herself into. I don't know, maybe it's an excess of sympathy for poor Richard.

I find it impossible to feel bad for Richard. He stays. He obviously had an overbearing mother and seeks that out in a mate. Richard needs to grab his balls more often, we know he can, but he doesn't and so he deserves the henpecking.

It was a nice theory. It died before its time...

people don't want to *think*, for chrissakes. why do you think danielle steele and absurd reality tv shows are so mind-numbingly popular? most of the people in the world really aren't that bright.

Crate - 2004-11-03 09:09:13
SG - People still watch reality TV? I feel so out of touch...

I really liked The Great Gatsby. I really did. We over analized it in high school, which I hate doing and yet I still liked it. Its been a while thoguh.

Gumphood - Yeah. We always used to over analyze things in high school. I guess it makes the english teachers feel more important.
